WTF is Nutritional Yeast?

I have gotten so many messages lately asking me WTF is Nutritional yeast (since I am currently addicted and putting it on everything right now ), so I thought I would do a little post about it!

Nutritional yeast (aka Nooch) sounds super gross! In fact I tried it as a teenager and totally gagged! LOL. But as an adult, I have to say I find it totally delicious!!

It kind of has a nutty cheesy flavor. I personally have been using it in place of cheese lately since me and dairy are not friends. But it is an awesome savory boost for other dishes as well! Doesn't always have to be in the place of cheese . You can use it in broths or stews or even on popcorn!

Nutritional yeast is a deactivated yeast that's related to Brewers yeast, which is actually used as a fermentation agent in beer making (cool right?! )

The yeast is grown on a food source such as molasses and then harvested, heated, dried and crumbled. Yeasts are actually a member of the fungi family!

Anyways the long and short of it is it's called nutritional yeast because it is Jam packed with goodness!

Just 1 tablespoon of nutritional yeast can contain :
* 180% Daily Value B1 (Thiamine)
* 160% Daily Value B2 (Riboflavin)
* 70% Daily Value B3 (Niacin)
* 140% Daily Value B6 (Pyridoxine)
* 40% Daily Value Folic Acid
* 40% Daily Value B12
* 3 grams protein
* 1 gram fiber

(These are averages & can change from brand to brand)
My two favourite brands are : Bobs Redmill, and Red star

But the long and short of it is, that it tastes awesome, it has a ton of uses, and it has some kick ass nutrients in it!
Have you ever tried it or are you planning to?
